All of what Ramsey said about ‘a little bit of a disconnect’

All of what Ramsey said about ‘a little bit of a disconnect’

PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – It was the last two questions of Steelers safety Jalen Ramsey’s weekly media availability that blew up on social media before the Steelers host the Colts on Sunday.

Ramsey was asked due to the injuries, and trading Joey Porter, Junior, how quickly a couple of the new corners (Terell Smith and Sean Murphy-Bunting) could get up to speed to help the secondary.

Here is the exact quote.

“Coaches have to put them out there with us so we can all get on the same page,” Ramsey said. “There’s a little bit of a disconnect here right now just with what we want to do on the field and how we play as a team and how we play together as a secondary versus just throwing a playbook in their hand and coaches saying this is how it has to look.”

“That’s not how football works. The best way to get guys acclimated and the best way for guys to get on the same page is actually be able to practice with each other and play games with each other.”

Asked if the disconnect he mentioned is between the defensive backs and the coaching staff or between the players.

“I think Aaron (Rodgers) said it the other day in his press conference, the best teams I’ve been on in my career are player-led teams,” Ramsey said. “We are the ones on the field. We are the ones that see and feel how the game is going and the flow of the game. When we can all be on the same page that usually brings some success instead of just some guys going with the flow of the game, some guys going off of experience and then some guys having a playbook stuck in their locker and having to learn by the book things that offenses nowadays, in 2026, don’t give you by the book, drawn-up formations.”

“We just got to get that together. I think that’s the biggest thing.”

It was the last question of the session and Ramsey left immediately after. There wasn’t an opportunity for more clarity on what he meant.

After it all got out there, Ramsey posted Friday afternoon on social media a couple of hours after his comments.

“In regards to today’s media session, i rock wit the coaches. i have absolutely nothing but respect for them ALWAYS but the best way to getting acclimated with new teammates is being on the field with them. that’s simple. they have to hear the terminology we use ON THE FIELD. we have to see how they play different techniques within the system. that’s a simple concept to understand lol. i was asked how they were getting acclimated & answered honestly. Go ask

@Realrclark25 if Troy played strictly by the playbook or if they worked with each other on the field within the playbook regardless, much love & let’s get back on track with a win on sunday 🤟🏾 #herewego”

Obviously there is some frustration and a need for the secondary to get more time together. Ramsey said in both the interview and his post that the players need more reps on the field and not just what they see in a playbook, but real-time experience.

How do you interpret his meaning? And more importantly, can they all get on the same page and improve.
