The Pirates 21st-ranked prospect in the system is making his way north with the rest of the club.
It was announced Monday that infielder Diego Castillo will be on the Opening Day roster when the Pirates open the season Thursday against the Cardinals in St. Louis.
This spring, Castillo is hitting .321 going 9 for 28 with five home runs and 10 RBI in 12 games before Monday's game.
He made his case for making the club on Monday, going 4 for 4 with another home run and two RBI in a 9-4 Pirates win against the Orioles.
The 24-year-old was acquired by the Pirates last year as part of a deal with the New York that sent Clay Homes to the Yankees.
“We're going to get him out there more,” Shelton said via MLB.com. “His versatility and the way he swung the bat is really important for us. And we've always talked about being able to play different infield positions, but when you can bounce out and play the corners, too, it provides a ton for us.
“I watched his early work today ... stuff around the wall, and he did a really nice job with it. He's a baseball player. We put him on the field, he's gonna do his job.”
According to the Pirates, Castillo has only been to one MLB game in his life and that all changes on Thursday.
