Cam Heyward talks but status for Sunday still in question

Defensive captain Cam Heyward says he’s getting ready to play in the Steelers opening game against the Jets, but wouldn’t give a definitive “yes” to suiting up.

Heyward spoke to the media on Friday after he dressed for practice, ahead of the team’s opening game in New York this Sunday.

It’s the first time Heyward has spoken to the media in nearly a month, but we still don’t know if he will play to open the season.

Heyward is looking for an increase in salary from his current contract and has said “we’ll see” about playing on Sunday.

The Rooney family historically doesn’t deal with player contracts in-season. Heyward says he doesn’t know what the future holds for him if he doesn’t get a new or reworked deal.

“I don’t want to have to think about that, I’d like to think cooler heads prevail and we move forward,” said Heyward. If nothing happens, he says he’ll deal with it then.

The bottom line, we still don’t know if Heyward will play if he doesn’t get more money.
