PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – The first offensive play was a false start and the struggles continued the entire game. The Steelers didn’t convert one third down until the game was decided and the Chargers in prevent defense. It was a horrid offensive performance in perfect weather conditions as LA won at home 25-10.
The shame of it was there were opportunities, especially early. The Chargers kicked the opening kickoff out-of-bounds setting the Steelers up at the 40-yard line and they could do nothing with it.
On the next possession, a poor punt gave the Steelers the ball at the Chargers 46-yard line. They could only gain a few yards leading to a 59-yard field goal.
On the third possession, the Steelers offense gave up points, Aaron Rodgers scrambled in the end zone and as he spun the ball went off Troy Fautanu’s leg. Rodgers fell on it in the end zone and Khalil Mack gets the credit for the safety. They drove into the red zone one time only to have three straight incompletions for no points.
The stats were so bad it doesn’t seem possible, and note that a number of these yards were gained in the last drive, when yards were given by LA like Halloween candy.
· 221 total yards (65 in meaningless final drive)
· 2 of 11 on 3rd down (both third downs converted in meaningless final drive)
· Steelers averaged 4.4 yards per pass (it was 2.0 until the fourth quarter)
· Rodgers 16-31 for 161 yards, TD, 2 interceptions
· Time of possession 37:35 to 22:25 advantage Chargers
· Steelers ran only 50 plays and were sacked three times
Even on special teams, receiver Ke’Shawn Williams muffed a punt leading to the final Los Angeles field goal.
If you are hunting a positive, Jaylen Warren hurdled a Chargers defensive back. Warren ran hard and finished with 14 carries for 70 yards, but it really didn’t matter. Roman Wilson caught a touchdown in his second straight Sunday Night game, unfortunately neither impacted the outcome.
