PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Pirates expect Ryan O’Hearn to miss around a month with a right quad strain as GM Ben Cherington explained with Jason Mackey on the Pirates Insider Show on 93.7 The Fan Sunday.
“It’s on the moderate side, but it’s not going to be a 10-day thing,” Cherington said on 93.7 The Fan and the Pirates Radio Network. “It’s going to be weeks probably until he’s back. I hear things like roughly a four-week type of thing, but it’s early to predict that.”
Cherington said the 32-year-old will do everything he can be beat that timeline. O’Hearn is third on the Pirates in home runs and RBI and a fixture in the middle of the lineup.
As for what now?
“It gives us an opportunity to take a fresh look at the outfield mix as we go into the road trip,” Cherington said. “Without O’Hearn in the lineup, how do we optimize the lineup? What gives us the best chance to win games? We’ll talk about that over the next several days.”
Pirates did get outfielder Jake Mangum off the injured list on Sunday and he will be in the outfield mix.
