PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Reports Cam Heyward did not practice on Thursday, as his defensive coordinator and a veteran teammate believe he will play as the season opens Sunday in New Jersey.

Heyward is looking for an increase of the two-year, $29 million extension he signed last year after having an All-Pro season. Early in camp he held-in, but had been a full participant for the last week.

In season typically Heyward would get a veteran Thursday off, Heyward was not available for comment before or after practice on Thursday.

“Absolutely,” said Steelers defensive coordinator Teryl Austin when asked if he thought Heyward would play against the Jets, “he's been practicing, so I'm anticipating him playing.”

It was then asked of Austin what he thought about Heyward saying ‘we’ll see’ when asked if he is going to play on his podcast.

“Then that's what he says,” Austin said. “I just know what I see he's out there practicing, so I'm anticipating him playing.”

Austin said Heyward is doing everything he’s done in previous years to get ready for the season.

“He’s our leader,” said linebacler Alex Highsmith. “I’m confident he’s going to play. We know the type of player he is and what he means to our defense. I’m confident he will play.”
