93.7 The Fan (PITTSBURGH) - For the fourteenth time in franchise history, the Pittsburgh Pirates were no-hit.
Shota Imanaga no-hit the Pirates through seven scoreless. He struck out seven batters and walked two. After he finished the seventh inning, his pitch count was at 95 pitches and the Cubs decided to yank him from the game.
Imanaga's pitch count took a hit after three Cubs errors in the game extended innings for the Pirates. He has thrown more than 100 pitches three times this season, with a career high of 103 pitches.
"We knew he was a good pitcher. He threw the ball on the plate and we didn't hit a ton of balls hard," said manager Derek Shelton.
Nate Pearson pitched a clean eighth inning and Porter Hodge closed out the ninth.
Oneil Cruz grounded out to Dansby Swanson to end the game and give the Cubs their first no hitter at Wrigley Field since 1972. It's the eighteenth no hitter in Cubs history.
Since 2012, the Pirates have now been no-hit four times. Homer Bailey (2012), Max Scherzer (2015), Lucas Giolito (2020) and now Imanaga, Pearson and Hodge combined.
The Pirates lost the game 12-0. Domingo German allowed six earned runs in three innings pitched.
