Depressing numbers around 'inept' Steelers OC Matt Canada

A “shame.”

The good news for the Steelers is they are 19-3-1. The bad news is that is only when the defense allows 22 points or less.

That’s from NFL analyst Warren Sharp, who did a video dissecting Steelers Offensive Coordinator Matt Canada last week. At the time he said he didn’t want to do the video but found the numbers disturbing.

Sharp is back after another Steelers blowout, this time at the hands of the Houston Texans, who are not the San Francisco 49ers.

Sharp goes on to say that when the defense gives up more than 22 points, they’re 1-15, “that shift is the largest in the NFL.”

So the defense has to play well for the team the win, the offense isn’t going to bail them out.

“It almost doesn’t even matter what the offense does, because that’s how bad Matt Canada is at coaching up the offense,” adds Sharp.

Some other shameful numbers since Canada came to Pittsburgh (per Sharp):

Offense is bottom five in NFL in points scored.

Since 2021, Steelers rank 31st in yardage, 31st in points scored in the first quarter.

The Steelers have moved the ball into the red zone one time out of 26 attempts.

“55 percent of their drives fail to create a new set of downs” worst in NFL.

Highest rate of three and outs.

Average fewest plays per drive.

Sharp also addresses some of the excuses, a mediocre offensive line and a young quarterback.

The Steelers just lost to a bunch of backups on the offensive line and a quarterback who just played in his fourth game.

“The reality is this, Matt Canada doesn’t understand how to win games in modern football, he’s putting his team behind,” said Sharp.

That means we have no idea what kind of quarterback Kenny Pickett will be until Canada is gone.

“The play calling is so inept and inefficient,” said Sharp. “He’s calling the wrong things at the wrong times, he’s predictable, he’s not creative and he’s not aggressive and those are like the three deadly sins of a play caller in this league.
