The situation with Gregory Polanco keeps getting weirder.
Pirates manager Derek Shelton says that Polanco will play on Monday night against the Arizona Diamondbacks, despite being placed on outright waivers on Sunday.
Another Major League team has 48 hours to claim Polanco, but will also have to pick up his $2.4 million remaining salary for this season.
The Post-Gazette’s Mike Persak reports that Polanco can “stay active until he is claimed by another team or placed on release waivers.”
Shelton gave reporters no other information, thus not clearing anything up with the situation.
In 102 games for Pittsburgh, Polanco has a .169 batting average, 64 hits, nine doubles, two triples, 11 homeruns and 34 RBI with an on-base percentage of .278 and 98 strikeouts.
The Pirates have an option to keep Polanco for $12.5 million in 2022 or buy out his deal for $3 million, something that is likely to happen if another team does not pick him up this season.
Another team has until Tuesday afternoon to claim Polanco, something that is not expected to happen.
Shelton also said that infielder Michael Chavis, who was acquired at the trade deadline, is in Pittsburgh.
