Disastrous 10-run 7th inning, Dodgers pummel Pirates

PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Wilber Dotel had been one of the few success stories in the Pirates bullpen. The 23-year-old had a 2.16 ERA with a 0.90 WHIP in 16.2 innings, but Tuesday night he got knocked around by the Dodgers in a disastrous seventh inning and a 12-3 final.

Los Angeles scored (10) runs in the seventh inning, six before an out was recorded. It was the most runs the Dodgers scored in an inning since June 2, 2021 against the Cardinals (11 runs)

Dotel didn’t register an out in the seventh inning giving up a pair of singles, an RBI double to Shohei Ohtani, Andy Pages two-run homer, a walk and another single before Don Kelly got him in favor of Brandan Bidois, who did only slightly better and then Dennis Santana faced one batter and got a flyout.

Skenes start

An ERA of nearly five in his last handful of starts, Paul Skenes went six innings giving up six hits, two runs, two walks and seven strikeouts. The righty needed only nine pitches to get through the first inning, but left throwing 103 pitches (62 strikes) total through those six innings.

The runs scored on a sacrifice fly and a tough-hop, two-out grounder to second ruled a hit in the sixth inning.

Back-to-back

For the second time this season, Bryan Reynolds and Ryan O’Hearn hit back-to-back home runs. This time is was Reynolds first with a 422-foot shot to left and then the lefty with a 355-foot homer to right.

Cruz out

Originally in the starting lineup, centerfielder Oneil Cruz was scratched late in favor of Jake Mangum due to recurrent left-hand discomfort. He remains day-to-day. The 6’7” outfielder is also dealing with lower-body stiffness according to Pirates Director of Sports Medicine Todd Tomczyk.
