PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – One of the noticeable moves setting the 53-man roster is starting safety DeShon Elliott going on injured reserve, where he would have to miss at least the first four games. GM Omar Khan elaborated Monday with reporters, plus other injury news.
“He had a significant injury last year and it’s been less than a year, so we say ‘hey, let’s be smart about it’,” Khan said at the UPMC Rooney complex on the South Side.
Khan said Elliott has not regressed after coming back from a season-ending knee injury suffered on October 26 last year. He also hasn’t suffered any type of setback, but just trying to be cautious with what he called a significant injury.
“I mean you guys know him, he’s a warrior,” Khan said of Elliott. “I mean if he walked in here and I said give me 1,000 push-ups, he’s going to give us 2,000.”
“It was the right thing to do.”
There is the possibility of adding a veteran safety to the practice squad to join 10-year veteran Rayshawn Jenkins and rookie Robert Spears-Jennings with Jaquan Brisker at safety. Khan praised Spears-Jennings for his growth during camp, saying he’s really come along and they expected him to contribute this year.

- QB Will Howard and WR Ben Skowronek are both in concussion protocol, but Khan sees them clearing in the next couple of days.
- FB Riley Nowakowski (ankle)-will be good to go
- WRs DK Metcalf and Michael Pittman missed all of the preseason games, but he doesn’t see any issues with either playing September 13
- S Jaquan Brisker and DL Sebastian Joseph-Day (much of camp) have each missed time with undisclosed injuries, but are also expected to be ready for Week 1
