LATROBE, PA (93.7 The Fan) – Have you noticed over the last decade we find an excuse to use the word penultimate, Monday was that in terms of open practices at St. Vincent College. The team practiced with a heat index in the 90s with what is believed a minor injury to a starter. Plus, other injury news and results from the practice,

Here is the Fan 5 from Latrobe.

#1 Injuries
·     Corner Darius Slay rolled his ankle, doesn’t appear to be significant, head coach Mike Tomlin said he will be back ASAP
·     DB Jalen Ramsey is scheduled to return on Tuesday and is expected for the joint practice on Thursday. Tomlin said it’s more about getting opportunity for others.
·     WR Calvin Austin situation remains unclear, but he didn’t practice again on Monday and hasn’t for most of camp with an undisclosed injury
Others who missed practice
·     LB Alex Highsmith wore a jersey during individual drills and was with his teammates but did not participate as he is dealing with a groin injury.
·     Tight end Jonnu Smith went through some work on the side, but didn’t practice.
·     Tackle Calvin Anderson remains out
·     Guard Isaac Seumalo was not at practice, Spencer Anderson took his spot with the first team

#2 Will Howard

He injured his hand at camp last Tuesday, quarterback Will Howard went through a few drills on Monday. The rookie still is wearing a brace on his right hand that covers his pinky and goes about halfway up his forearm, but he was able to go through footwork drills, although he never threw a pass. Howard was also there taking notes as the team progressed through the practice.

#3 2-minute first team

First time the first-team had a successful two-minute drill. The situation was 1:09 on the clock with the ball at their own 20-yard line and the offense needed a field goal. Aaron Rodgers with a 19-yard completion to Scotty Miller, 12 yards to DK Metcalf, another 13 to Miller before finding Miller again for 11 as he got out of bounds leading to what was ruled a successful field goal without a kick.

#4 Don’t forget about Thornhill & Echols

The attention on the addition of Ramsey and Slay, but Tomlin asked about the contributions of safety Juan Thornhill, with a big hit on a PBU Saturday, and corner Brandin Echols, also with a key pass-breakup against the Jags.

“I’ve been pleased with the progress of those two, not only Saturday night, but in general,” Tomlin said. “We’ve acquired some high-profile guys. Some guys with big resumes that get a lot of attention. Those two have done a nice job of learning what to do, let their talents show and bringing the competitive spirit to our work daily.”
