The Pirates have made several moves before they begin a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox.
Manager Derek Shelton says that third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes is going on the 10-day injured list.
He has been dealing with back spasms and hasn’t played since last Thursday against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
In a corresponding move, the Pirates have recalled third baseman Kevin Padlo from Triple-A Indianapolis.
Padlo was Designated for Assignment earlier this month by the Seattle Mariners and then claimed off waivers by the Pirates on August 7, before being assigned to Indianapolis.
In four games with the Indians, Padlo has eight hits in 15 at bats and is batting .533.
In 10 games in the Majors this year with the San Francisco Giants and Mariners, was batting .182 in 22 at bats. He has four hits including one double and three RBI.
Right handed pitcher Roansy Contreras is rejoining the team and will start Wednesday against the Red Sox.
Contreras was shut down shortly before the All-Star break to develop further in Indianapolis.
In Pittsburgh, Contreras was 3-2 with a 3.78 ERA over nine starts.
He has 50 strike outs over 50 innings.
Since he was sent to Indianapolis, Contreras went 1-0 over four starts.
