Steelers defensive captain Cam Heyward says he is “excited” that the Steelers are signing quarterback Mitch Trubisky, but indicates that it won’t automatically be his job.
The multiple-time Walter Payton Man of the year finalist told Cook & Joe during our annual Giant Eagle “Feed the Need” campaign to help the Greater Community Pittsburgh Food Bank, that he’ll need to compete with Mason Rudolph and Dwayne Haskins to win the job.
“I think we have a good group of guys that all want to be the starter, you know they got some big shoes to fill in Ben Roethlisberger,” said Heyward. “Whether it’s Dwayne, Mason or now Mitch.
“Mitch is a guy who has played a little more than the other two, but we’ll see what happens during camp,” added Heyward.
The defensive tackle also talked about the additions made to the offensive line, including signing free agent James Daniels.
“The more the merrier for the offensive line . . . we got some guys there but we can always add to our offensive line,” said Heyward.
It’s also been announced Heyward’s line-mate Montravius Adams signed a new two-year deal with Pittsburgh.
“He’s got good explosion off the ball,” said Heyward. “He’s going to be a quality piece with him and Tyson (Alualu) inside, I think that really provides a lot of depth for our group.”
While not saying for certain that Stephon Tuitt will be back, he said he’s been talking with him and “we’re excited about having a chance to have him back.”
More important than football, Heyward was on with 93.7 The Fan to show his support to the Feed the Need campaign.
The need across southwestern Pennsylvania has increased dramatically due to the effects of COVID-19. The pandemic has resulted in a 42% increase in food insecurity in the region since 2018.
