PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – For the first time since it became public that Cam Heyward is looking to restructure his contract, the Steelers captain was in full uniform and out on the field on Tuesday.
Heyward told Pittsburgh reporters on August 11 that he doesn’t feel valued and said he would consider holding out games. He was staging what has become almost yearly with someone in a contract dispute called a hold-in, meaning the player shows up, usually does individual work, but not team. Heyward had stopped doing the individual drills, but was at practice every day and very active, just not on the field.
Tuesday, the final day of the preseason, Heyward was in full uniform, took part in individual drills and Tomlin said he also did some team periods. Heyward was not available for comment after the two-hour practice and Tomlin would only say we would have to ask Heyward if anything has changed with his situation.
The 36-year-old is looking for a raise from the $14.75 million total this season, much of which he already has in a signing bonus of $13.45 as he is playing for $1.3 million in salary.
“Has it gone the way I wanted it to go, no,” Heyward said on August 11. “If it did, I would be out there playing and practicing. I would like to put this in the rearview mirror and worry about ball and the New York Jets Week 1.”
