PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Just a couple of rehab starts in for a pair of Pirates starters, they will return to Pittsburgh on Monday. Whether Endy Rodriguez or Spencer Horwitz will be activated from the injured list is unsure.
“Endy’s going to play (Sunday), assuming that goes well, he'll get back here later (Sunday), and we'll make an assessment about him (on Monday),” said Pirates GM Ben Cherington. “Spencer's doing well. He did get hit in the helmet (Saturday) night with a pitch, so we need to check on him.”
There were no immediate after effects with Horwitz following being hit. He would stay in the game in Bradenton Saturday and hit a home run in his next at bat. The first baseman is coming back from a left hamstring strain. The 28-year-old was hitting .280 with a .386 on-base percentage and .841 OPS with 11 doubles and 10 home runs.
Rodriguez is considered the Bucs starting catcher even though he splits time with Henry Davis. Shawn Ross started on Sunday and became the fifth different starting catcher this year. Rodriguez is dealing with glute and hip issues and doubled and drove in a run on Friday at AAA. The switch-hitter had a .260 average, .388 on-base and .858 OPS in 35 games with six doubles and five home runs with the Pirates.
Bucs host the Diamondbacks Monday through Wednesday, Arizona is currently holding the final playoff spot.
