PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Once again an opportunity for Jared Triolo for a few weeks, month, maybe longer. He played a lot of shortstop with Konnor Griffin’s initial injury and now likely will get the most while the rookie is out with a finger issue.

Triolo hit .234 with a .337 on-base percentage in June and got on base in 20 of the games last month. He’s also hitting .308 early in July. The numbers are improved, it’s just no where near the power that Griffin has. The 28-year-old Triolo has 10 doubles and one home run in 171 at bats with a .316 slugging percentage and .628 OPS.

As far as AAA, the Bucs just released shortstop Davis Wendzel who played 65 games with Indianapolis hitting 10 homers. Jack Brannigan is a recent call-up from AA and is 5 for his 19 at bats with the Indians.

Nick Gonzales can play shortstop and they could recall Enmanuel Valdez. The 27-year-old is the International League Player of the Week and has a .794 OPS with 14 doubles and 10 home runs as a third baseman. The lefty hitter played 31 games with the Pirates last year hitting .209 with a pair of home runs in 91 plate appearances. He can also play second and first base.

Thing is, even at 20-years-old and only 59 games in the majors, there isn’t a replacement for Konnor Griffin.
