
Pittsburgh could soon be home to another Hall of Fame coach.
Former Pirates manager Jim Leyland is one of eight on the Contemporary Baseball Era Manager/Executives/Umpires ballot that will be considered in early December.
Leyland is joined by three other managers, two executive and two umpires on the ballot.
Joining Leyland is Cito Gaston, former Toronto Blue Jays manager, two-time Manager of the Year Davey Johnson and Lou Piniella 17th on the all-time wins list.
Umpires Joe West and Ed Montague are on the ballot along with front office executives Hank Peters a Bill White.
All men are living except for Peters. The ballot features “candidates whose primary contribution to the game came since 1980.”
Leyland managed the Pirates for 11 seasons between 1986 – 1996, winning three Eastern Division titles in a row.
He won a World Series as the Marlins Manager in 1997 and won and AL Pennant with the Tigers in 2006 and 2012.
He also spent a season as Rockies manager.
In his 22 years as a manager, Leyland was 1769 and 1728. He was 851 and 863 overall in Pittsburgh.
He was named the Manager of the Year twice with the Pirates and once with the Tigers.
The results of the Contemporary Baseball Era Committee vote will be announced on MLB Network on December 3.
A candidate must receive votes on 75 percent of the ballots cast.
Those elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame will be enshrined on July 21, 2024.
Leyland and his family still live in the Pittsburgh area.
