Joey Bart joins Perez on IL, Hayes and newcomer activated

As previously revealed by Derek Shelton on his weekly 93.7 The Fan radio show, starting pitcher Martin Perez has been placed on the injured list and third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes has been activated.

Perez has been placed on the 15-day IL. Joining him will be catcher Joey Bart, with a thumb injury.

Bart was injured during Sunday’s loss to the Braves. He has been placed on the 10-day IL, retroactive to May 27.

Taking Bart’s spot on the active roster is Grant Koch. The Pirates selected his contract on Tuesday afternoon.

The 27-year-old was batting .167 in Triple-A Indianapolis with one home run and five RBI in 17 games so far this season.

He was added to MLB taxi squad last Wednesday.

Koch has never played in a Major League Game and was taken in the fifth-round of the 2018 draft out of the University of Arkansas.

The Pirates have catcher Henry Davis in Triple-A. He’s batting .297 over 18 games since begin sent down at the beginning of the month.

He has 14 RBI, six home runs and an OPS of 1.116 after he was batting .162.

While Davis has been heating up since going to Triple-A, Shelton said they don’t want to rush players like Davis and Suwinski back to Pittsburgh.

“It takes time,” said Shelton. “We want to make sure these guys go through the grind a little bit of all the different scenarios we can go through.”
