FOXBOROUGH, MA (93.7 The Fan) – Mike Tomlin said he probably was not going to have Kaleb Johnson return kicks in the short term, but will get an opportunity to work his way back from that error. After letting a ball get behind him on a kickoff that led to a Seattle touchdown, Johnson is active for the Steelers game at New England Sunday.
Tailback Trey Sermon was activated from the practice squad on Saturday taking the roster spot of guard Max Scharping, who went on the reserve/injured list with a knee injury. That means the team has four active running backs against New England.
The 26-year-old Sermon was the 49ers third-round pick in 2021 rushing 41 times for 167 yards and a touchdown. He spent 2022 with the Eagles carrying it two times for 19 yards. The last two years with Indianapolis 91 attempts, 319 yards, 3.5 per attempt and two touchdowns adding 19 receptions for 112 yards. Sermon, 6, 215 pounds, has only returned one kick in his NFL career.
It also means defensive tackle Derrick Harmon will be available for his first NFL game. He suffered a preseason knee injury and missed the first two games.
