
PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – No Pirate third baseman has ever won the Gold Glove Award, Ke’Bryan Hayes is a finalist this year after another outstanding season in the field.
The 26-year-old led all MLB third baseman in Defensive Runs Saved with 21, that is according to the Fielding Bible with Ryan McMahon next at 17. Hayes is also fourth an any position in runs saved behind Daulton Varsho, Fernando Tatis and Andres Gimenez.
Colorado’s McMahon is Hayes chief competition along with Atlanta’s Austin Riley.
The Pirates have another candidate, kind of. Carlos Santana is up for the award leading all first basemen with a +12 Outs Above Average and 11 Defensive Runs Saved. He played most of the first four months with the Pirates before being traded to Milwaukee.
While not a Pirate, Mt. Lebanon native and Cubs outfielder Ian Happ is a finalist among left fielders tied for third among outfielders with 12 assists in 2023. He’s up against David Peralta and Eddie Rosario.
Catcher Jacob Stallings is the last Pirate to win a Rawlings Gold Glove, that coming two years ago.
