For the first time in quite a few years, Pirates fans are hyped for the future.
There is enthusiasm, hype and attitude about the future of the franchise not seen since 2015.
Since coming to Pittsburgh in November 2019, General Manager Ben Cherington has said he will rebuild the team’s farm system to once again make them a competitive team.
It’s something that Cherington has done since, building the minor league system into a top 10 organization for the first time in 5 years.
Now with the 2021 MLB Draft, Cherington continues to prove he means business. According to Baseball America the Bucs have “taken four of the 32 best prospects in the draft.”
With the Pirates taking catcher Henry Davis 1st overall out of Louisville, some say there is a chance he’ll be at PNC Park sooner rather than later, “He’s a guy who could be in the big leagues in two years and I wouldn’t be surprised at all,” said former Pirate Gabby Sanchez, now with the ACC Network.
And it’s not just fans who are excited for the future.
The picks themselves want to bring winning baseball back to Pittsburgh.
“Everyone in the organization it was clear they are chasing the same thing,” Davis said. “They are chasing greatness for the Pirates. They see the vision where they can be great. They can win World Series. Just being able to contribute a teeny bit going towards that goal, I’m super-excited, ready to go.”
World Series is a pretty lofty goal for a team like the Pirates but the latest draft picks believe it could be a reality in years to come.
The Pirates second pick Anthony Solometo out of Bishop Eustace Prep School responded to a welcome message with a big statement.
“LET’S WIN A WORLD SERIES THANK YOU PITTSBURGH.”
Another pitcher, third round pick Bubba Chandler, has already added he is a “Ball player for the (Pittsburgh Pirates),” on his social media.
Chandler has also reportedly told Clemson, where he committed to play football/baseball will instead sign with the Pirates.
“Let’s get to work,” said Chandler.
Also if that isn’t enough enthusiasm, a normally subdued Cherington had some colorful language talking to his team after their pick on Sunday night.
“I think we should be really excited about Henry Davis, he’s going to come in and work his f***ing a** off to be a really good Major League player and help us win games
