
The WPIAL basketball playoffs are over, as is broadcast coverage on KDKA Radio for the 2023-2024 season. Congratulations to the 12 new WPIAL basketball champions crowned this weekend at the Petersen Events Center.
Throughout the season, KDKA Radio has put together a watch list of some of the best boys and girls basketball players in the region. Soon, we will unveil the top performer from each WPIAL classification, and one member of the Pittsburgh City League, who will receive the prestigious KDKA Super 7 Award.
Here are the top performers from last week’s WPIAL title games:
Tyler Robbins, Upper St. Clair
Following a couple of tight regular season games against rival Baldwin, the Panthers left no doubt in the Boys Class 6A Championship Saturday night.
Robbins led the way.
The 6-foot-9 center went for 22 points, 12 rebounds, three assists and five blocks in a 64-41 blowout of the Highlanders.
Robbins has received some Division I interest, including Robert Morris. The Panthers, now 20-5, face Central Dauphin in the PIAA First Round Saturday.
Alayna Rocco, North Catholic
North Catholic entered the WPIAL basketball championships with the most titles in district history. They added their 23rd championship in dramatic fashion Saturday.
The Trojanettes toppled top seed Blackhawk, 40-37, in overtime to claim to championship.
Rocco, a senior committed to Harvard, took over after halftime, scoring 26 points with four rebounds and three steals in the win.
North Catholic went to 17-7 and will face Conneaut in Saturday’s PIAA first round.
Josh Pratt, Aliquippa
No team had a more dominant showing in the WPIAL basketball championships than Aliquippa, which throttled Greensburg Central 69-32.
Pratt led the way, putting up 33 points, two assists and three steals, as the Quips shot a remarkable 12 of 15 from beyond the arc. Pratt, a sophomore, drained seven of the nine 3-pointers he took.
Aliquippa has now one 13 WPIAL titles, the second-most in district history. They next face Otto-Eldred in Saturday’s PIAA first round.
Pratt’s brother, LA, currently plays at Elon.
Erica Gribble, Greensburg Central Catholic
The Centurions scored a runaway victory Thursday, bouncing Serra Catholic 62-41 at the Petersen Events Center.
Gribble put on a show, scoring 28 points with two rebounds, two assists, two steals and three blocks.
Gribble, whose sister Alayna played at Pitt and Saint Joseph’s, has received Division I offers from Navy, Villanova, Quinnipiac, Monmouth, and Bucknell as only a sophomore.
The Centurions will next face Bellwood Antis in Friday’s PIAA first round.
