While section play generally paused this past week, there were still plenty of games on the high school basketball schedule, with numerous tournaments being played to close out 2024.
This season, KDKA Radio will again nominate players each week to join the KDKA Radio Super 7 Awards watch list. Every Monday, a new crop of players will be unveiled based on their efforts that previous week. At the end of the year, KDKA Radio will announce the winners of the award for each WPIAL boys and girls classification, as well as the Pittsburgh City League.
Here are the top performances from Week 3:
Grant Spacciapolli, Pine-Richland
Pine-Richland has picked up a pair of impressive wins of late, beating North Allegheny in a game featured on KDKA Radio before a victory Saturday over a strong Beaver team.
On Saturday, Spacciapolli led the Rams to a win over the Bobcats, posting a career-high 34 points in the 71-56 win.
The 6-foot-3 junior also contributed 11 rebounds in the victory, moving the Rams to 4-3 on the season.
Spacciapolli has recently received a college offer from Division I Pepperdine.
Aubree Hupp, Blackhawk
Blackhawk stepped out of the region for a pair of games this past weekend, and they claimed impressive victories in both.
Hupp led the way against a duo of teams from Maryland, going for 25 points in a win over Southern Garrett and 22 more in a victory against Walkersville.
The wins helped the Cougars — a WPIAL runner-up last season — to a 9-2 record to begin the year.
Hupp has offers from Slippery Rock and Mercyhurst.
Rowan Carmichael, Avonworth
Carmichael will close the 2024 portion of the WPIAL basketball season as the district’s leading scorer at 35.6 points per game.
His holiday week helped the cause.
The senior went for a remarkable 46 points against North Hills on Monday in a 84-73 win. Carmichael added 30 points against Woodland Hills Friday in a 72-42 blowout. He then racked up 42 points in a 97-63 rout of Penn Hills Saturday.
Carmichael has offers from Coker and Edinboro.
Kylie Fruehstorfer, Union
Fruehstorfer has become one of the top forces in WPIAL girls basketball over the last couple of seasons, helping the Scotties to two straight championships.
The senior guard has led Union to a 9-0 start this year, including a pair of wins last week.
She scored 17 in a victory over Brentwood Friday before dropping a career-high 27 against South Side the following afternoon.
Fruehstorfer is committed to Pitt-Johnstown.
High school basketball broadcasts continue on KDKA Radio Friday as Baldwin meets South Fayette. Coverage begins at 6 p.m. on 1001. FM and AM 1020 KDKA.
