As we hit the final games of January, the postseason races are kicking into high gear. And last week, despite a Friday that was (mostly) snowed out, there were still plenty of top performances from local basketball players.
Throughout the season, KDKA Radio will put together a watch list of some of the best boys and girls basketball players in the region.
At the end of the year, the top performer from each WPIAL classification, and one member of the Pittsburgh City League, will receive the prestigious KDKA Super 7 Award.
Here are the top performers from last week:
Cam Rowell, Franklin Regional
It was a massive week for Franklin Regional, picking up a pair of strong wins. And Rowell paced the attack.
The senior went for 28 points in a 77-53 win over McKeesport Wednesday. He followed that with 31 points in a 72-62 double overtime win over top-ranked Shaler Friday.
Between the two games, Rowell also had 13 rebounds, three assists, nine steals and six blocks.
The Panthers are now 13-2 this season.
Gemma Walker, Peters Township
Peters Township has a special tandem going once again, as Walker and Natalie Wetzel have been a nightmare for opponents. Last week, it was Walker's turn to shine.
She scored 22 points in 52-42 win over Canon-McMillan Tuesday, and went for 22 again on Friday, going over 1,000 points in her career, in a 59-55 overtime win over rival Bethel Park.
The Indians – Class 6A's lone unbeaten team – are 16-0. Wetzel is committed to Division I Saint Francis (Pa.).
Max Hurray, North Catholic
Despite missing some time with an ankle injury just after Christmas, Hurray has bounced back nicely here of late with some great performances.
On Tuesday, he scored 23 points against Beaver in a 64-49 win. Two days later, the senior point guard racked up 31 points against Ambridge in a 101-51 runaway victory.
Hurray has the Trojans at 10-5, with a 6-1 mark in Section 2-4A.
He has picked up collegiate interest from Division II and some Division I schools.
Jaedin Griggs, Moon
Moon grabbed a pair of key wins last week, including a big section victory. And Griggs was the driving force.
She scored 21 points against section foe Montour in a 48-45 win Monday, and followed that with 23 points in a 64-39 win over South Park Thursday in a non-section contest.
The sophomore guard and the Tigers are now 10-5 overall this season.
KDKA Radio's high school basketball coverage continues this week. On Friday, you can hear Highlands vs Hampton on 100.1 FM and 1020 AM KDKA Radio. Follow @KDKARadio on X (Twitter) and Instagram for updates throughout the games.
