The WPIAL football playoffs began this past Friday with a number of thrilling games and strong individual performances throughout the region, including a trio of big games from wide receivers who led their teams to postseason wins.
This season, KDKA Radio will again nominate players each week to join the KDKA Radio Super 7 Awards watch list. Every Monday, a new crop of players will be unveiled based on their efforts that previous Friday night. At the end of the year, KDKA Radio will announce the winners of the award for each WPIAL classification, as well as the Pittsburgh City League.
Here are the top performances from Week 10.
Drew Cook, South Allegheny
Drew Cook has already established himself as a remarkably versatile athlete in the WPIAL. But his versatility on the football field was on display Friday night.
Cook caught four passes for 52 yards and two touchdowns, had one carry for 30 yards, returned a punt 69 yards for a touchdown and had both an interception and fumble recovery on defense to help South Allegheny beat Waynesburg 61-13 in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs.
The win was an impressive bounce back for the Gladiators, which suffered their first loss of 2025 a week prior.
Cook — a first team all-state basketball player — has accounted for nearly 1,000 yards of offense and scored 17 touchdowns this season. The Gladiators will meet Washington in Friday’s quarterfinal.
Justin Melvin, Bishop Canevin
Since their Week 7 loss to Fort Cherry, Bishop Canevin has been racking up the points, including Friday night in a 50-35 win over Greensburg Central Catholic.
Justin Melvin was responsible for two of the Crusaders’ touchdowns, pulling in 140 receiving yards along the way.
The all-conference receiver and defensive back has racked up nearly 600 receiving yards and seven touchdowns in 2025.
The Crusaders will meet Frazier Friday in the Class 1A quarterfinals.
Kane Eggerton, Thomas Jefferson
While Thomas Jefferson running back Tyler Eber has earned much of the headlines this year due to the Jaguars’ tenacious ground game, Kane Eggerton was able to add a little splash through the air and on defense Friday.
The junior pulled his 130 passing yards and two touchdowns and returned an interception 99 yards for another score in the Jaguars’ 31-14 win over Mars in the 4A quarterfinals.
Eggerton 130 yards nearly doubled his receiving output from the season in the game.
The Jaguars will face top-seeded McKeesport Friday in a game you can hear on KDKA Radio.
Bobby Fadden, Mohawk
Bobby Fadden may just be one of the most versatile athletes the WPIAL has ever seen.
A five-sport athlete, Fadden has excelled in football, basketball, baseball, track and field, and golf.
On Friday, he showed what he can do on the gridiron, passing for 139 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for another 72 yards in Mohawk’s 17-14 win over OLSH.
This season, Fadden has passed for over 1,400 yards, rushing for over 500 yards and accounted for 23 touchdowns for the Warriors, which play top-seeded Seton LaSalle Friday in the Class 2A quarterfinals.
