KDKA Radio Super 7 Watch List: Week 2

Week 2 of the high school football season brought a number of great finishes throughout the region, including a thriller at Belle Vernon in a game you heard on KDKA Radio.

In addition to those tight games were numerous strong individual performances in the WPIAL. Today we'll highlight the four best.

Throughout the season, KDKA Radio will put together a watch list of some of the best players in the region. At the end of the year, the top performer from each WPIAL classification, and one member of the Pittsburgh City League, will receive the prestigious KDKA Super 7 Award.

Here are the top showings from Week 2:

Jake Wolfe, Montour

Wolfe is one of the best dual threat quarterbacks in the region, and he showed why Friday in Montour's 42-35 win over South Fayette.

The senior accounted for 438 yards of offense, including 265 through the air and 173 on the ground. He passed for one touchdown and ran for four more – the final four scores of the game – bringing the Spartans back from 17 points down.

His 6-yard run with just over a minute to play proved to hold up as the game's winning score.

Wolfe, who is also an all-section basketball player, will now try to lead the Spartans to an upset of Aliquippa this Friday.

Eric Doerue, South Park

It was a big night for Doerue, who currently ranks second in rushing in the WPIAL this season.

On Friday, he led the district in yards on the ground with 253 in a 38-0 romp of Brentwood. Doerue added three touchdowns, as the Eagles moved to 3-0 on the year.

So far, the junior tailback has rushed for 522 yards and four touchdowns in three games.

He and South Park will look to keep the unbeaten season going Friday against another 3-0 team, Beaver.

Codi Mullen, Knoch

One of the great stories of the young season has been in Saxonburg, where Knoch is off to a 3-0 start after a 1-9 season in 2022.

After defeating Hampton and Indiana in the first two weeks, the Knights got another strong performance from Mullen, who passed for 239 yards and three touchdowns – all to receiver Kaden Spencer -- in 27-18 win over Beaver Falls

Mullen, who broke Knoch's single-season passing record last year, is currently third in the WPIAL in passing yards this season with 759 yards.

The Knights next face another surprising 3-0 team, Southmoreland, in a big game Friday.

Brock Cornell, West Allegheny

One of the most versatile threats in the WPIAL, Cornell was able to help West Allegheny bounce back with a runaway win Friday. And he did it right from the start.

The senior returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown in a 48-6 victory over Ringgold. He then added three rushing scores, made five tackles and intercepted a pass before being taken out of the game at halftime.

Cornell, the son of Indians baseball coach and football defensive coordinator Bryan Cornell, has offers from Duquesne and Albany. His younger brother, freshman Brodie Cornell, racked up seven tackles in his first varsity game Friday, as well.

The high school football season continues Friday, as KDKA Radio will once again provide award-winning broadcast coverage of the region's biggest game of the week. This week, you can hear Franklin Regional at Gateway on 100.1 FM and 1020 AM KDKA Radio. Follow @KDKARadio on X and Instagram for updates throughout the night.
