Retired goalie turned executive, Ron Hextall has been hired as the Pittsburgh Penguins general manager after Jim Rutherford suddenly resigned late last month.
Brian Burke, who was last in the NHL as the Calgary Flames president of hockey operations has been appointed to the same job in Pittsburgh.
Hextall reportedly had a virtual interview with the Penguins last week.
The 56-year-old spent his early teen years in Pittsburgh.
Hextall's father, Bryan Hextall Jr., spent five seasons with the Penguins as a forwards in the early to mid-1970s.
Hextall spent 13 of his 11 seasons as a player with Philadelphia.
After retiring, Hextall joined the Flyers organization as a scout in 1999.
He then later took a job with the Los Angeles Kings as the organization's vice president and assistant general manager, a position that also saw him overseeing the Kings' AHL affiliate Manchester Monarchs.
Hextall won a Stanley Cup in L.A. before going back to Philadelphia to became the Flyers assistant general manager and director of hockey operations, before becoming the team's general manager in 2014.
He was fired in November 2018 and has since worked as an advisor for the Kings in their Hockey operations department.
