Former big leaguer Neil Walker has played a lot of golf in his day. But the longtime Pirates infielder will always remember his round with Yoenis Cespedes.
On The Fan Morning Show Monday, Walker recounted the most unique golf game he’s ever been part of: playing with Yoenis Cespedes. Beforehand, Walker was warned the outfielder was new to the sport and had a quirky approach — such as playing without shoes.
But Walker didn’t know how good Cespedes actually was. Despite his idiosyncrasies, Walker says he was the best golfer on the Mets.
“We went out and played a very nice course in Florida,” Walker said. “And this guy was one of the best golfers on the team. I couldn’t believe it. He picked up the sticks maybe three to four years earlier, he’s playing at probably a 4-handicap, he’s trying to bet on every single hole. He’s not wearing shoes, he’s got music absolutely blaring. It was one of the most incredible things I’ve ever seen.”
Growing up in Cuba, Cespedes wasn’t exposed to golf until he came to the U.S. The dynamic outfielder played eight seasons in the majors, including four with the Mets, where he overlapped with Walker in 2016 and 2017.
Cespedes was unorthodox as a baseball player, often swinging from his heels and uncorking sensational throws from left field. It’s not surprising his athleticism and hand-eye coordination translated to the golf course.
Newly retired, Walker has even more time this summer to get on the course, though his game will have to take a temporary pause on July 3. The Pirates are honoring Walker at PNC Park that night. He’ll be throwing out the first pitch as well.
Here’s hoping it’s better than 50 Cent’s infamous offering at Citi Field, which Walker witnessed live.
“He tossed one almost 90 degrees to the left, somehow,” Walker said.
I would hate to see 50 Cent’s golf game.
