Pirates activate Gamel, Tsutsugo from IL

Marcano and Park to Triple-A

Two familiar faces are rejoining the Pirates in time for their two-game series against the New York Yankees.

To make room, the Pirates have sent infielder/outfielder Tucupita Marcano and infielder Hoy Park to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Gamel was on the shelf with a left hamstring injury since late May. Pirates General Manager Ben Cherington indicated over the weekend that he would be soon rejoining the Major League team.

Tsutsugo has also been out since late May with a lumbar muscle strain.

Gamel was hitting .257 with 17 RBI and three home runs before he was injured, so he'll likely see more playing time.

Tsutsugo on the other hand was batting .177 with two home runs and 15 RBI before his injury. The veteran said he's been dealing with the injury all year and finally feels healthy and believes he can carry on AAA success and make an impact again in the majors.

"I think earlier in the season he'd taken restricted swings," said Pirates manager Derek Shelton. "The swings he's taken over the last two weeks at Indy have been unrestricted. They've definitely been more aggressive."

Shelton now adds two veteran bats and a third in Kevin Newman any day. As for how he will mix the playing the veterans and the younger players.

In addition, catcher Tyler Heineman has been placed on Paternity Leave and catcher Jason Delay has been activated from the team's Taxi squad.

Also, infidler Yu Chang was claimed off waivers by the Tampa Bay Rays.
