PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Five no-hit innings for the Pirates top pitching prospect following his promotion. 19-year-old Seth Hernandez made his High A Greensboro debut Friday night going five innings, no hits, four walks and seven strikeouts against Jersey Shore.
The right-hander, in his first full season of professional baseball, started six games at A Bradenton, 3-0, 0.96 ERA, 28 innings, 13 hits, three runs, two home runs, seven walks, 50 strikeouts, 0.71 WHIP, .135 batting average against.
“I think we expected him to show up and throw hard,” said Pirates GM Ben Cherington on Thursday. “Have really great stuff, be exciting in that way. You don’t know with a high school pitcher how well they’re going to execute and do all those things. That’s been very encouraging, just how much he’s been in the zone with all of his pitches. His mix, he’s getting outs with all of his pitches. He’s also been recovering really well. His between starts routine has been really strong. We’re excited about where he’s at.”
