PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Pirates take a second pitcher to open up the second day of the MLB Draft and first lefty. NC State’s Ryan Marohn goes in the fifth round after dealing with some injuries last year, but was 6-1 with a 3.18 ERA in 45.1 innings in 2026.
The 21-year-old was drafted by Cleveland in the 20th round out of high school in Virginia. He pitched for the US collegiate national team last year. He missed some time with biceps soreness and a forearm strain.
Marohn throws a little across his body and can bring a wide arm angle. He’s seen by MLB.com to have a better floor than ceiling with a fastball that ranges 90-93 mph and a mid-70s curve. Along with the 3.18 ERA last year, he struck out 62 batters with 22 walks and a .204 opposing batting average. The lefty had a career game against Florida State, striking out a career-high 10.
In his three-year college career, 18-6, 3.51 ERA with 199 strikeouts and 66 walks in 189.2 innings.
