PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – “I hope so, man. That’s all I can do is just hope.”

Joey Porter, Junior as he stood at his locker after practice on Friday. The question obviously about whether he will get a new contract before the Steelers self-imposed deadline on negotiations before the season begins.

Porter thinks he’s prepared to play and his back is getting better ‘trending in the right direction’.

Is there anything that gives him optimism?

“No not really, at this point we got, I don’t know how many days we got until gameday, but the clock is ticking. It is what it is at this point. We are going to be prepared regardless of the situation and we are going to play ball.”

From what Porter, Junior is saying, based on that answer and others is that he will play, if healthy on Sunday, regardless of his contract. Reports are he wants to be the highest paid corner in the NFL.

“I don’t know where that came from,” Porter, Junior said. “Whoever made that up. It’s the internet, I really don’t pay too much hype into that.”

Porter, Junior’s father went through contract negotiations and told him to just life his life normally. His teammates have ‘been good to me’ and they have been prepared with what they need to focus on, per Porter, Junior in getting ready for the regular season.

Does going through this process impact Porter, Junior’s feelings about the Steelers organization?

“No, I don’t think so. At the end of the day, it’s business. I know what that is and I have my head straight to understand that. My dad has been in this league as a coach and a player so he has knowledge on that. It’s nothing new to me even though it’s my first go around. That’s how I look at it.”

It’s not definitive if Porter, Junior will play. He says he’s getting healthier. But time is running out for a new deal.
