PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – It doesn’t come as a surprise given what we’ve heard from Steelers GM Omar Khan and the drafting of a tackle in the first round, but ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reporting Thursday the team won’t pick up the fifth-year option on Broderick Jones.
Jones, the 2023 first-round pick that the team traded up to draft, has started 38 of his 45 games with the Steelers including all 11 games to begin the 2025 season until he suffered a neck injury. It’s bad enough that he wasn’t able to return to practice, let alone a game last year.
Khan said he hasn’t had a setback as reported, but is still going through the process of recovery.
The estimated cost for a fifth-year option for Jones would be over $19 million for next season. Declining the option doesn’t mean they can’t sign Jones to a contract extension, it just allows him to be a free agent after the 2026 season.
