Six Pirates prospects named to All-Star teams

General Manager Ben Cherington has overhauled the Pirates minor league system into one of the best in baseball in just two years.

Several prospects have been honored in MiLB over the past two days.

High-A Greensboro outfielder Matt Frazier has been named the High-A East MVP.

Frazier finished the season for the Grasshoppers with a .314 average, 95 hits and 20 home runs.

The 23rd prospect in the Pirates system, according to MLB Pipeline, was also named a postseason all-star.

Frazier’s teammates, second baseman Nick Gonzales (4th overall prospect) and third baseman Jared Triolo were also named to the postseason All-Star team.

Gonzales batted .302 this past season with 98 hits, 18 home runs and 54 RBI. Triolo batted .304 with 128 hits, 15 home runs and 78 RBI.

Greensboro right-handed pitcher Quinn Priester was also named to the All-Star team as well as being named The High-A pitcher of the year.

Priester went 7-4 over 20 starts for the Grasshoppers in 2021 with an ERA of 3.04 with 98 strikeouts over 97.2 innings pitched and a 1.24 WHIP.

Third ranked Pirates prospect Oneil Cruz and 17th ranked prospect Mason Martin were named to the Double-A All-Star team.

Cruz hit .292 in Altoona before being called up to Triple-A Indianapolis in September. He had 73 hits, 12 home runs and 40 RBI with the Curve.

Cruz also played in the last two games of the season for the Pirates, homering in the season finale.

The first baseman Martin, who was also called up to Triple-A Indy late in the season, hit .242 with the Curve with 22 home runs and 75 RBI.
