A familiar name is back with the Pirates.

Outfielder Canaan Smith-Njigba was claimed off waivers from the Seattle Mariners on Monday.

Smith -Njigba was designated for assignment by the Pirates on January 31.

He was claimed by Seattle a week later.

Smith-Njigba was on the Pirates 2023 Opening Day roster, but spent most of last season with Triple-A Indianapolis.

He hit .280 with 74 RBI, 15 home runs and an OBP of .366 over 105 games.

To make room for Smith-Njigba, the Pirates placed JT Brubaker on the 6-day injured list.

Brubaker is recovering from Tommy John surgery and is expected to make his return sometime around mid-season.

The Pirates also signed RHP Chase Anderson to a minor league contract. That comes with an invitation to Spring Training.

Anderson is the 59-56 over his 10-year career. He has a 4.35 ERA over 218 games with 881 strike outs.

Anderson went 1-6 with the Colorado Rockies last season with a 5.75 ERA.
