The Steelers aren’t in the Super Bowl, but their offseason plans have apparently been a topic this week on Radio Row.
The Fan’s Andrew Fillipponi tweeted Thursday he’s hearing the Steelers will be interested in cornerback Marcus Peters in free agency. That would be a big signing, though at this stage in his career, it’s apparent that Peters isn’t the elite corner he once was.
But still, he would represent an upgrade for the Steelers, who need to improve their secondary. Their top corners are currently Cameron Sutton and Arthur Maulet, with Levi Wallace slotting in at No. 3.
After missing all of the 2021 season with a torn ACL, Peters started 13 games last year for the Ravens. He recorded an interception, two fumble recoveries and six pass deflections. Pro Football Focus ranked Peters 49th out of 118 qualifying cornerbacks last season.
The Steelers expressed interest in Peters prior to the 2015 NFL Draft, though the Chiefs selected him at No. 15 overall — three spots before Pittsburgh picked. Peters won NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year and made first-team All-Pro in his sophomore campaign.
His success continued with the Rams and Ravens , earning another first-team All-Pro appearance in 2019. Peters has spent the last three seasons in Baltimore The 29-year-old has 32 career interceptions, tying him for fourth-most among active players.
Of course, price will probably be the biggest factor in determining Peters’ market. But if he comes at an affordable price, signing a proven ballhawk could be palatable than drafting a corner and expecting him to contribute immediately.
