PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – It was a legacy pick in the seventh round for the Steelers, linebacker Carson Bruener comes with pick 223. He actually was in his family cabin Saturday in Washington on the same couch that his father sat in when he was drafted by the Steelers three decades ago.
His father, Mark is a scout with the Steelers currently. He spent Thursday with the team and flew out on Friday to be with his son on this day. Carson said they had no inside information, no idea this was happening.
“We were literally just talking about it and he said ‘I could see the Steelers picking you with the next pick, but we will see’,” Carson Bruener said. “About two seconds later, I get a phone call from Pittsburgh. It was a crazy moment.”
Bruener knows more than just his father and a few coaches in Pittsburgh, he was teammates with last year’s Steelers first-round pick Troy Fautanu. He’s also brings more than just a former Steelers father, he was Third-Team All-Big 10 at Washington. A team captain and defensive MVP with 104 tackles and three interceptions.
He will be able to process all of this one day.
“Being in this couch where my dad was drafted three years ago is a crazy, full-circle moment,” Carson Bruener said. “I’m happy we were able to do it. It’s absolutely insane. It’s hard to wrap my head around.”
He believes watching his father play and having him as a coach and mentor, he’s ready for anything that comes his way with the Steelers.
