PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Coming off a career season, Jonnu Smith’s best receiving game in 2025 with the Steelers was 29 yards. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports the team released the tight end Wednesday night.

The move will reportedly save the Steelers $7 million under the salary cap and Jonnu immediately becomes a free agent. Smith had played for every team offensive coordinator Arthur Smith coached, Smith left for Ohio State in January.

Steelers traded for Smith in June last year after he blew away his career total with 884 receiving yards on 88 receptions and eight touchdowns with Miami in 2024. Last season with the Steelers, just 38 catches for 222 yards and two touchdowns.

Steelers still have tight ends Pat Freiermuth and Darnell Washington under contract with Smith and Connor Heyward as free agents.
