Steelers sign international OLB to practice squad

The Steelers have signed a linebacker to the practice squad.

27-year-old German native Julius Welschof, an outside linebacker was signed by the Steelers as an undrafted free agent after this past year’s draft.

He takes the international roster spot that every NFL team has as part of the International Player Pathway Program. That means he doesn’t take up a practice squad roster spot.

He was injured after a preseason game for the Steelers and was waived shortly after, at the end of August.

Welschof was also selected in the second-round of the Canadian Football League draft by the Calgary Stampeders.

His college career started in Michigan, playing in 35 games before transferring to Charlotte, playing in only four games before suffering an injury.

Welschof is a native of Miesbach, Bavaria, Germany.
