PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Mike Tomlin said an hour before the news broke they were interested and active in the trade market. Steelers add a veteran receiver Tuesday who at one point was one of the best in the league.
30-year-old Mike Williams comes from the Jets for a 2025 fifth-round pick. He has played the lowest percentage of snaps (53%) since his rookie season in 2017 this year. He had a catch against the Steelers on October 20 for 15 yards. His season best in his first season with New York are four catches for 67 yards against Denver. Overall 12 catches on 21 targets for 166 yards, 13.8 average and no touchdowns.
Over a span of four seasons with the Chargers, he was one of the more dangerous receivers in the game.
· 2019 49 receptions, 1,001 yards, 20.4 average (led NFL), 2 TD
· 2020 48 receptions, 756 yards, 15.8 average, 5 touchdowns
· 2021 76 receptions, 1,146 yards, 15.1 average, 9 touchdowns
· 2022 63 receptions, 895 yards, 14.2 average, 4 touchdowns—in 13 games
In 2023, Williams was placed on injured reserve after tearing his ACL, ending his season after three games. This year, Williams was still recovering from injury and never worked into the Jets plans. He was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list during camp and never seemed to mesh with Aaron Rodgers.
He signed a one-year, $10 million contract with the Jets as a free agent this offseason. The Steelers will be responsible for just over $300,000 as most of the deal was already paid in bonuses.
Williams was the seventh overall pick of the 2017 draft out of Clemson by the Chargers.
