LATROBE (93.7 The Fan) – Day two of Steelers camp and the offense looked much better and more efficient than the opening day although the workouts ended in an interception.
Best throw
Wednesday it was clear-cut, there were a number of good throws on Thursday. Several over-the-middle to DK Metcalf. A near connection, as Aaron Rodgers threw about a 35-yard pass into the end zone, in the only place he could beat coverage, Roman Wilson dove and nearly caught the touchdown. Rodgers had a couple of others, especially on the two-minute drive, to Metcalf. Will Howard’s seam throw to Robert Tonyan was slightly better than others. Howard had another great deep pass to Levi Wentz, Mason Rudolph threw a perfectly timed ball over the middle to Germie Bernard with pressure coming. A lot to choose from Thursday.
Best catch
Metcalf had a couple, but a touchdown from Rodgers where he wrestled the ball from the back of rookie Daylen Everett and kept his feet inbounds in the back of the end zone was the highlight catch of the day.
Top 3 wide
Make no doubt the three receivers who work consistently with the first-team offense are Metcalf, Michael Pittman and Wilson. Roman likely has as many catches as anyone through two practices.
End game
An undrafted free agent who was signed off the practice squad and then re-signed, Sebastian Castro intercepted Howard over the middle of the field to end practice.
“I mean obviously, didn’t finish well,” said Howard, saying it had gone well before that point.
Special teams
One of the loudest cheers of the day was a booming punt by Cam Johnston as it’s another change of camp with only one punter and one placekicker in Latrobe. Typically, under Mike Tomlin there would be a back-up punter and kicker.
Chris Boswell made all his six kicks, capping it off with a 55-yarder that would have been good from at least another 10 yards back.
Offensive line
Starting offensive line remained Troy Fautanu-Mason McCormick-Zach Frazier-Spencer Anderson and Dylan Cook. Max Ihenachor was the first sub at right tackle with Cook moving over to left. Broderick Jones worked at a second-team left tackle.
Defense
The starting defense was Nick Herbig on the right and TJ Watt on the left with Cam Heyward, Sebastian Joseph-Day and Derrick Harmon between them. Payton Wilson and Patrick Queen were the linebackers with Jamel Dean, Jaquan Brisker, DeShon Elliott and Asante Samuel, Junior in the secondary. Yahya Black and Cole Holcomb were early subs.
Samuel had the PBU of the day sprinting over on a ball from Rudolph to Pat Freiermuth on the near sideline, jumped and knocked it away and then celebrated to the crowd at Chuck Noll Field.
Two more non-padded practices including Saturday when the newest Hall of Honor class will be announced. They will be off on Sunday and then put the pads on Monday.
