Stephon Tuitt returns but Steven Nelson out again

Ben Roethlisberger and Chris Boswell both questionable

PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) — Defensive end Stephon Tuitt returned to Steelers practice but cornerback Steven Nelson missed a second straight day.

And Nelson is officially listed as doubtful for Monday's game against Washington at Heinz Field.

In addition, Ben Roethlisberger (knee) did not practice for a second straight day and was joined by kicker Chris Boswell who popped up on the report with a hip injury.

Both are officially questionable for Monday.

Mason Rudolph typically gets at least one full day per week with the first team, anyway, and earlier this week, the club signed kicker Matthew Wright to the practice squad as insurance.

Wright was with the team in training camp in 2019.

Nelson suffered a knee injury during the win over Baltimore and was able to finish the game but is not helped by the five-day turnaround between games.

If he cannot go, presumably Cam Sutton would start in his place, but expect to see a decent amount of Justin Layne who has earned more trust from the coaches at outside corner.

James Pierre and Robert Brooks could also get a few snaps in certain defensive packages.

The encouraging news was the return of Tuitt from the Reserve/COVID list.

That should help against Washington's run game led by Antonio Gibson who leads all rookies with 11 rushing touchdowns, which is also third in the NFL, only behind Dalvin Cook and Derrick Henry.

Monday's kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
