
PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – While little happened in the first quarter there were man key plays, both ways including another Pitt LB INT, special teams impact, a quarterback with a 27-yard reception and the refs wiping out a huge Pitt play because they weren’t ready. It’s the BIG plays from the Virginia 24-19 win.
1st quarter
· After an offensive 3 and out with 3 penalties and a negative run, Virginia got the ball at the Pitt 33. On 2nd and 10, Virginia’s best receiver, Malachi Fields tipped the ball once, then again and it fell in the arms of Nebraska transfer, senior Tamon Lynum, for his first college interception.
· Neither team has done much offensively, but Xavier Brown burst up the middle on 2nd and 10 for 28 yards
· 2 plays later, Virginia QB Anthony Colandrea hits Andre Green for 24 yards
2nd quarter
· A reverse pass from receiver Suderian Harrison to a wide-open Colandrea for 27 yards down to the Pitt one-yard line
· TD, Brown scored on the next play, a one-yard TD run (6 plays, 78 yards, 2:31), 7-0· 3rd and 10, the offense going nowhere, Holstein is under pressure and just throws it up for grabs towards Konata Mumpfield, Virginia DB Corey Thomas tackles Mumpfield for a 15-yard gain by penalty
· After a couple of successful plays, a Pitt holding penalty forced a 2nd and 17, Holstein threw a quick out to running back Desmond Reid, he caught the ball, thrown behind him, with one hand and raced 32 yards to the Virginia 8
· TD, 3rd and goal, Daniel Carter muscles through the middle for a 1-yard TD (12 plays, 80 yards, 4:41), 7-7
· 3rd down on the ensuing drive for Virginia, Pitt linebacker Kyle Louis reads the eyes of Colandrea trying to force it to Fields, he returns it to the Pitt 24. It’s his fourth interception of the season, the most of any linebacker in FBS.
· FG, Ben Sauls 44-yard field goal (4 plays, -2 yards, 1:31), 10-7 Pitt
· Sliding catch by Pitt WR Poppy Williams for 23 yards got the Panthers down to the Virginia 30 with 29 seconds left.
· FG, Sauls 48-yard field goal (7 plays, 24 yards, 1:11), 13-7 Pitt
3rd quarter
· Pitt LB Rasheem Biles started the 2nd half with a third-down sack and a Cavs three-and-out
· Holstein running for yardage and as he slid he was hit by Trey McDonald, called for a targeting penalty as the ball went to the Virginia 33-yard-line. Holstein would be knocked out of the game
· Virginia special teams impact play, Jonas Sanker blocking a Sauls 44-yard field goal attempt
· Following the blocked FG, Collandrea with a 27-yard rush (also had a 27-yard reception) to the Pitt 24.
· TD, Collandrea pass to Brown over the middle and he is untouched into the end zone (5 plays, 73 yards, 1:59), 14-13 Virginia
· Sanker INT on QB Nate Yarnell keep pass, caught it in centerfield and returned it 45 yards to the Pitt 20.
· Cavs RB Kobe Pace 12 yards on 3rd and 5 down to the Pitt 3
· TD, Pace 3-yard TD run up the middle (4 plays, 20 yards, 1:48), 21-13
4th quarter
· Reid took a handoff, quickly saw nothing in the middle of the line and sprinted right for a 34-yard gain on 2nd and 10 early in the quarter
· Yarnell throws a nice pass to TE Gavin Bartholomew for 20 yards on 2nd and 11 down to the Virginia 9.
· TD, Yarnell with 4-yard TD on 3rd and goal to Bartholomew (12 plays, 86 yards, 4:21) 21-19
· 2-point conversion initially completed but Ryan Baer called for holding when the Virginia player slipped down. Second-chance 2-point attempt was incomplete
· 3rd down and 15, just before he was hit by Louis, Collandrea able to find Chris Tyree for 25 yards
· Pitt gets a 4th down stop, but it’s overturned and Virginia gets another play because they refs said they weren’t in position for the play. Cavs would convert on their second opportunity.
· Donovan McMillon breaks up a sure TD pass to Sackett Wood that would have put the game away
· FG, Will Bettridge 32-yard FG (16 plays, 60 yards, 8:26), 24-19 with 2:04 to play
· Penn Hills HS grad Corey Thomas picked off a Yarnell deep pass attempt with 1:40 to play.
