Is too much togetherness a bad thing? Is it healthy to spend every waking and sleeping moment with your spouse?

An increasing number of couples are answering the latter question with a resounding “no!” as they engage in what’s become known as “sleep divorce.”

“Sleep divorce” is simply the act of sleeping in a separate bed or room from your spouse, and some experts say it can aid both members of a committed couple in both falling asleep and remaining asleep by lessening disruptions.

Those disruptions can include stolen covers, snoring, and alarms that wake both sleepers when only one needs to be up.

Millennials are leading the way in the sleep divorce revolution, according to a new survey by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. About 43% of millennial couples sleep separately.

A third of Gen X couples also engage in the practice with a total sitting right at 33%. As for the oldest and youngest generations surveyed, 28% of Gen Z couples and 22% of baby boomers also sleep separately.

While they admit the term “sleep divorce” might sound a big rough, the results actually show that a large number of couples are now prioritizing healthy, replenishing sleep over societal norms.
