Four people were wounded on Monday night after a shooter opened fire at a Walmart near Dayton, Ohio, before turning the gun on himself and taking his own life, police shared.
The Beavercreek Police Department shared that the suspect, identified only as a male, entered the store at approximately 8:35 p.m. and opened fire on four people before taking his life.
The department shared that he died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
“No shots were fired by any responding police officers,” police said in an update.
Those wounded in the shooting were taken to a local hospital for treatment. Their conditions were not provided at a news briefing from Capt. Scott Molnar on Monday.
It is unclear at this time if the suspect knew any of the victims in the store or if the shooting was random, Beavercreek police shared.
The incident follows national trends, as the Gun Violence Archive reports that there have been at least 609 mass shootings in the US this year, defined as a shooting in which four or more people are shot, not including the shooter.
A Walmart spokesperson shared a statement with CNN on Monday night, noting that the company is heartbroken.
“This remains a developing situation, and we’re working closely with investigators on the scene,” the statement said.
The FBI, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations are currently assisting the Beavercreek Police Department in investigating the shooting.
