The beloved Heart's Coffee Shop in Van Nuys is closing after nearly 50 years.

The diner’s last day will be Sunday, Aug. 9.

Susan Wong says her parents have kept the meals here affordable since opening in 1979, even as costs on everything went up.

“They took the hit when food costs increased, labor increased, everything across the board increased,” she said. “So over the last few years, they really started dipping into their savings and just keeping it afloat post-COVID, and it was a decision my family, you know, has really, really grappled with over the last probably six months of ‘what are we going to do?’ If we don't pull the trigger now, there's not going to be much left.”

For many patrons, the diner’s closing is heartbreaking.

“We would come here on Sundays after church, and we always ordered the same thing: topsoiling steak and egg,” one woman said.

“We were just sitting there holding back tears, sitting there eating, and can't believe it's going to be my last time here,” another woman said.

Wong says that on the restaurant’s last day, they'll be selling memorabilia and shirts to the community that has shown them so much love over the years. The coffee shop's heart-shaped sign is being donated to the Valley Relics Museum in Van Nuys.
