Ninety years after it opened and eight years after getting a green light for construction and expansion, ground is finally being broken Thursday for a 21st-century passenger terminal at Hollywood Burbank Airport.
The old terminal, first built in 1930, has been upgraded over the years, but concerns about the building being too close to the runway and its ability to survive a significant earthquake finally promoted this major overhaul.
Felicia Williams, Pasadena councilperson and the president of the airport commission says when the new terminal comes online, it will have 14 gates that will accommodate up to 10 million passengers yet still have the feel of a neighborhood travel nexus.

"[At Burbank Airport], you park, and you walk into the airport. That's one of the best things about Burbank, so a lot of people prefer this airport," Williams told KNX News reporter Pete Demetriou adding that it is also her preferred airport.
The $1.2 billion project is expected to be completed and opened for travelers on October 1, 2026.
