For the last two years, we've been told to wear face masks when out in public — whether it was mandated by law or just strongly suggested as a way to keep COVID-19 cases in check.

Things are much different as we enter year three of the pandemic. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has a new perspective on when face coverings are required, which has many people wondering, "Do I still need to wear a mask?" Short answer: It all depends on where you are.

On Feb. 25, the CDC issued new guidance on indoor masking based on the COVID-19 level in the community -- suggesting that 90% of Americans no longer need to wear a mask. The guidance uses a new ranking system for classifying a county's risk factor for spreading coronavirus cases.

Under the guidelines, COVID-19 community levels can be low, medium or high, and are determined by looking at hospital beds being used, hospital admissions, and the total number of new COVID-19 cases in an area.

The CDC recommends that everyone wear a mask indoors in public, including in schools, in counties with a "high" level of coronavirus transmission. These communities have a large number of people experiencing severe disease and high potential for healthcare systems strains, according to the CDC.

There are some situations where people should always wear a mask, the CDC added. For example, if they have symptoms, if they tested positive for COVID 19, or if they have been exposed to someone with COVID 19.

The new guidance for masking goes beyond the number of new cases in a county and considers how well the health care system is holding up.

"This updated approach focuses on directing our prevention efforts towards protecting people at high risk for severe illness and preventing hospitals and healthcare systems from being overwhelmed," Rochelle Walensky, Director of the CDC, said during a press briefing.

To find your community level and determine where or when to mask, go to www.cdc.gov or call 1-800-CDC-INFO.

Although masking requirements have been lifted for most, the CDC notes that anyone is still free to mask up whenever they see fit.

"Anybody is certainly welcome to wear a mask at any time, if they feel safer wearing a mask. So we are absolutely endorsing if you feel more comfortable wearing a mask, feel free to do so," Walensky added.

The CDC also recommends that people who are high risk, such as someone who is immunocompromised, should talk to their healthcare provider about taking additional precautions and may choose to wear a mask.

What about if you're traveling? On March 10, the Transportation Security Agency extended its masking requirement on public transportation for another month. The mandate, which was set to expire on March 18, will now expire on April 18. So, if you're heading to the airport or bus station in the next month, be sure to pack your mask.
