For the first time in 22 years, the Primetime Emmy Awards has been postponed due to the ongoing actors’ and writers’ strikes.

Variety reported that the vendors for the awards show were informed the ceremony would be delayed.

“Like the rest of the industry, we hope there will be an equitable and timely resolution for all parties in the current guild negotiations. We continue to monitor the situation closely with our partners at Fox and will advise if and when there is an update available,” the TV Academy said in a statement.

The awards show was scheduled to air September 18. A new date has not been announced yet; however, Variety reported Fox is aiming for a date in January, while the TV Academy wants it in November.

Robert Thompson, a professor of television and popular culture at Syracuse University, told KNX News’ Jon Baird it is anyone’s guess when the show will actually air.

“They'll reschedule again and we could go a year without the Emmys,” he said. “Who knows what might happen.”

He added that unlike back in the day when there were only three networks, the Emmy’s take on a much more prominent role.

“Now, the Emmys really have an important marketing feature to them,” he said. “There's so much streaming out there. There's so much programming that the Emmys are a way in which some shows -some very good shows- actually penetrate the consciousness of people. So it's important for them to keep that whole system of audiences knowing what to watch and what's out there, and now that's not going to happen.”

The last time the show was delayed was in 2001 after the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center.

SAG-AFTRA members are prohibited from promoting their shows and movies throughout the duration of the strike. The same rule applies to WGA members. Writers are also not allowed to write monologues and jokes for awards shows.

The 76th Tony Awards aired in June with an unscripted telecast.
